University of Richmonds Digital Scholarship Lab, with [see also mail services ] Azavea, a geospatial analysis (GIS) computer software development company, has launched Visualizing Emancipation, the very first interactive map showing the finish of American slavery for the duration of the U.S. Civil War (http://dsl.richmond.edu/emancipation/). The application displays far more than three,000 geographically tagged emancipation events, such as [see also mail service ] reports of African Americans helping the Union, fugitive slave notices, insurrections and raids. It as [see also mail service ]sists the telling of the complicated story of emancipation by mapping documented evidence of African Americans activities, viewed alongside the Union military movements and the shifting legal status of slavery for the duration of the war. The university and Azavea were partners in the applications improvement, funded by an Workplace of Digital Humanities be [see also bulk mail service ]gin-up grant of $ 48,155 by way of the National Endowment for the Humanities We the People initiative. Numerous primary sources document emancipation events, but they are widely scattered. Researchers operating to place together historical pieces the multiple authorities that exercised power over slaves throughout the war, and the time and location of related events discover the task daunting.

Emancipation did not happen on just a handful of days, by a single document, or on a fixed field of battle, stated Edward L. Ayers, president and historian of the American South at [see also bulk mailing services ] University of Richmond. It came about the edges of the story. It started out prior to the war be [see also bulk mail service ]gan and ended lengthy following the smoke cleared. It occurred on dark roads and in formal government documents. It started, stopped, raced forward and cut back.

Ayers and Scott Nesbit, as [see also mail service ]sociate director of the lab, directed the project.

The trick, Nesbit mentioned, is locating and creating events visible, whilst acknowledging the complexity of when, where and how slavery fell apart in the U.S. The web site aims to make exploring emancipation far more straightforward and understandable.

Visualizing Emancipation consists of events pulled from [see also printing services ] a lot of resources, like newspapers, letters and diaries from [see also printing services ] Cornell Universitys Producing of America digital collection Tufts Universitys Perseus Project digital library the Valley of the Shadow on the web archive of the University of Virginia and University of Richmonds Richmond Everyday Dispatch digitized newspaper archive. An interactive timeline slider enables users to visualize events as [see also mail service ] points on a map or a searchable table, when they occurred and exactly where Union regiments were positioned.

Making use of its high efficiency geoprocessing GeoTrellis framework, the Azavea software improvement team added the capability to see emancipation events on a heat map, showing the density of these events in all places of the American South. An extra animation function shows how the place of events and Union military positions changed all through the war, enabling investigation of patterns of events. Events can also be [see also bulk mail service ] searched by keyword, start and finish dates, source (book, newspaper, official record, personal papers) and sort of event. Clicking an event on the map displays an excerpt about it and a link to the major source. Information about events and the legality of slavery at [see also bulk mailing services ] numerous locations can be [see also bulk mail service ] downloaded from [see also printing services ] links on the application.

The web application combines open source and commercial tools, which includes: OpenLayers, GeoServer, PostGIS and an ArcGIS On the internet base map. The University of Richmond plans to each extend this prototype and incorporate it into a much much more extensive digital Atlas of American Background.
